Can I get an STBBI if I have just partner?

Even if you have  had only one partner—who also had only you as a partner—monogamy doesn’t count as an effective method of protection against STBBIs.

You and your partner could still be at risk for several reasons:

  • You stopped using protection before you both got tested.

  • One of you has an STBBI but doesn't have symptoms (it’s possible to transmit it without knowing it, even after a long time).

  • There’s infidelity in your relationship.

  • You have been exposed to STBBIs in other ways, such as:

    • getting a tattoo or piercing with non-sterile needles

    • using drugs by injection or inhalation.
